£100,000 to British Tennis.£100,000 to British Tennis
April 2003

During the presentation of the DOE BEST BRITISH CLUB OF THE YEAR 2002 award to CLISSOLD PARK JUNIOR TENNIS CLUB on 26 April Dave Foster, the DOE director commented "We are delighted to be supporting yet another 'grass roots' tennis scheme for junior players. DOE has put over £100,000 directly into British Tennis over the last 20 years with the aim of 'growing' the game in the UK. The achievements of Clubs like Clissold make it all worthwhile and we look forward to a continuing relationship with the Club and its members in the future".

Clissold has grown from its inception - as the Oak from the acorn - to over 800 Junior Members and some 200 adults in just over 3 years without a clubhouse or even their own courts! The driving force behind the Club, Jan Coombs, said "We could not have achieved so much in such a short time without the tremendous support we have received from the parents, the children and, of course, The LTA City Tennis Club Scheme and its Development Officer, Funke Awoderu. The award from DOE is the icing on the cake for us this year and the money will be put to excellent use for further coaching and facilities".
